What to Expect During Your Upcoming All-on-4 Recovery

All-on-4 dental implants are one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways to replace a full arch of missing teeth, relying on the help of four strategically placed implant posts that support the new teeth. But since it involves a surgical procedure, understanding the recovery process is just as important as understanding how the treatment works! That said, here’s a closer look at what you can expect in the first few days and weeks following your All-on-4 surgery, so you can ensure a smooth and productive recovery.

The First 48 Hours

Immediately after surgery, it’s normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort around your mouth and jaw. Most patients manage this well with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication and by applying ice packs during the first day. You’ll also want to rest with your head elevated, avoid strenuous physical activity, and stick to soft, easy-to-eat foods. You can also expect some minor bleeding or oozing, but it should taper off after the first day or two. If it doesn’t seem to improve, or you experience other, irregular symptoms, don’t wait to contact your oral surgeon to let them know.

The First One to Two Weeks

Swelling and bruising typically peak around day two or three, but from there, things begin to gradually improve over the next week or two. During this period, you will also still need to stick to a soft-food diet in order to avoid putting too much pressure on your new implants and replacement teeth. Good oral hygiene is also essential during this stage, and you’ll need to be particularly careful around your implant sites. Your implant surgeon will provide you with detailed healing guidelines to follow that include hygiene, so be sure to follow them closely. Most patients also begin to return to work and light daily activities within this one- to two-week period.

Long-Term Healing

It will take your implants several months to fully fuse with your jaw and form the permanent bond that makes dental implants so valuable; however, you’ll begin to feel completely comfortable much sooner than that. Even though All-on-4 lets you replace your teeth quickly, it still falls on you to ensure that your gradual recovery process goes smoothly. But by sticking to your oral surgeon’s guidelines and showing caution, you can set your new smile up for a lifetime of success!
